Magic

Final Fantasy III's magic system is different from most other Final Fantasies, it uses a archaic magic system that was originally found in the original Final Fantasy. Each spell is used has a point value, once you level up, you gain more points for the spell, however there is no diferent increment point cost for a spell. For example, a Level 1 spell: Cure will cost 1 as the same as the Level 4 spell: Break. This also means that even if you run out of MP for Cure, you can still cast Break because it has a different cache of MP that is produced exclusively for it.

You can equip and de-equip indidivual spells by your characters - this can be useful to switch and store your purchased or found spells. On your Magic sub-menu, you can use, learn, remove and exchange your magic combinations. There is no consequence to removing the magic equipped, however you can exchange these setups to different characters.

The hardest part is trying to customize your magic for each character. You can purchase or find the learning item for the individual spell, but you can only learn a maximum of three same level spells per character. This makes it very difficult to customize different characters, however it also can diversify your characters at the same time. It would be better for you to have some of your characters learn different spells from the same level so you can have all of your characters learn the specific spell. Having one character learn all of the White Magic or another learning all of the Black Magic isn't recomended because you will place too much reliance on one character for a crucial spell - for example Cura.

The ability to cast magic is determined on what class you are currently on. Some are obviously appplicable, White Mages can only cast White Magic, Black Mages can only cast Black Magic, etc. Freelancers can only cast level 1 magic, Red Mages can cast all three types of magic.
