Abandoning the previous and mundane and 'over-used' status system, the License Board takes place of the Sphere Grid of Final Fantasy X. The alternate of the regular stat and leveling system, and is almost completely different than the Sphere Grid. In the FFX Sphere Grid, you can already completely view the entire Sphere Grid, and you move by AP gained from Battle. The License Board essentially appears like a Chess board. With the License Board, you can't view the entire board, nor is it complete, the board can only be viewed in terms of if you have enough License Points (LP). There are two sides of each board, like the Sphere Grid, each direction contains different abilites. The sides on the License Board is North and South, the Northern side contains Spells, Passives Skills, Techniques & Accessories. The Southern Side contains the license for Weapons and Armors. Despite that, Both sides of the board contain Mist Knacks and Espers.

The License Board doesn't have any direction restrictions, like in FFX's Sphere Grid, one character could only go through one path in the begining, while with the License Board, you can learn different abilites by going every direction you would like at any time, granted that you have enough License Points (LP). You earn LP (License Points) by defeating enemies, Access your License Board to buy what you want, All adjacent license around the one you've bought will be revealed, You can buy more licenses if you have enough LP. All of the party members can use the same License Board, but depending on the ability or item, different characters may been able to license different things, and other things may show up for one character, but not for any other, at least for a certain time. Due to this, it takes a while for you to gain the abilites you want. Even if you own the equipment or have the learned the magic, you still cannot use it without the license, and vise-versa.
