Game consoles or handhelds are a neccesity to play any game nowadays that is published and developed for any game console or handheld. Emulators are exact duplicates of game systems, they are a executatable file that emulate the runtime enviroment of a game system. Emulatorsare created by several groups unaffiliated with Square Nexus and they continously create better versions of the emulator to support more games. No emulator is perfect and can emulate the game system without any problems. When you buy a game, it usually is in visable format, like a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or a Game cartridges. These store information or data created by the game developers. The data cannot be rewritten or erased, it only can be read. This is where ROMS get their name, ROMS - READ ONLY MEMORY. Roms can be played on specific emulators that simulate their runtime enviroment. Roms can be ripped or copied from the original published format. To put it in plain words, ROMS are game files ripped straight from the original disc or cartridge themselves. ISOs are ripped from CD-ROMS or DVD-ROMS.
